ScaryU is perhaps the only haunted house school in the world!
Run by the non-profit Jewell Performing Arts Center in Rancho
Cordova, this teen program teaches students to build and run a
haunted house from the ground up at no charge to the students.
This year was a tough one, we were broken into and thieves made
off with about $30,000. worth of props, costumes and tools
collected over the years. Despite the loss, the kids decided
"the show must go on" and we scrambled to replace things to
open the show. We recieved donations from the community and
business' donated computers. But the two weekends the show was
open were the first rainstorms of the season and our attendance
was down. We are trying to raise funds to continue this
incredible program.
The Pirates of Sacramento, www.meetup.com/piratesofsacramento ,
a social group of pirate re-enactors, are having a pirate
costume ball to benefit ScaryU. This event is the first of it's
kind in Sacramento and will be very exciting for everyone.
We will have music by The Pirates Charles ( www.myspace.
com/thepiratescharles www.thepiratescharles.com ). This band
is the most popular in the pirate community and will be
headlining the PirateCon event in New Orleans in April. They
are very high energy, incredibly piratey and they are donating
their time for this event. We will have prize drawings, costume
contests, and we are looking for vendors of pirate swag for the
evening.
Costume is not required for the event, but it is encouraged.
